Former President and Chief Executive Officer, VF Corporation
Rob Gregory has an unusual mix of senior experience in both the private and public sectors with an extraordinary record of success as a Chief Executive Officer managing both large profitable companies and turnaround situations. Rob has served on the boards of over a dozen companies and has a BA from Wofford, a law degree from the University of South Carolina, and an AMP from Harvard.
Rob graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1964. He entered the University Of Virginia Law School, but was called into the United States Marine Corps as a Lieutenant. After his discharge, Rob earned a law degree from the University of South Carolina and then served as Legal Assistant to the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.
In 1969, Rob joined Akzo USA, a $1.5 billion conglomerate, and served as a division legal counsel and as a corporate acquisition and turnaround specialist. Then, in 1972, Rob joined Spartan Mills, a very profitable $400 million textile, healthcare, and logistics company. He served both as Group Vice President responsible for all profit centers and as General Counsel.
In 1979, Rob joined VF Corporation as President and Chief Executive Officer of its largest division, Lee. After doubling the division’s sales to $750 million and quadrupling net profits to $100 million, Rob became President and Chief Operating Officer of the parent company. Over the next 10 years, Rob led the company to grow sales from $879 million to $3 billion, while increasing profits by 525%. As a result, VF became the largest and most profitable publicly held apparel company in the world, and Rob was recognized by Fortune Magazine as one of the superstar managers of the decade.
Since leaving VF in 1991, Rob has worked with several major private equity firms to help them manage troubled investments ranging in size from $500 million to $1.5 billion. In this capacity, he helped the private equity holders and banks realize substantial returns and eliminate debt.
Rob is currently a partner in the executive on-boarding and transition acceleration firm, PrimeGenesis.
Along the way, Rob has served on the Board of Directors of companies including Spartan Mills, Catawba Chemicals, Bibb Manufacturing, C@S Bank, VF Corporation, United Missouri Bank, USF&G Insurance Company, Globe Manufacturing, Gitano Inc., London Fog Industries, Promus Hotels and Frisbee International; as a trustee of Umbro International; and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Wofford College.
