Pepper, John E.
Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Procter & Gamble Company
John E. Pepper started his career at The Procter & Gamble Company in 1963. He became General Manager of P&G Italia in 1974, returned to the United States in 1978 and was elected Group Vice President in 1980. In 1984, he was elected to the Board of Directors and was named President in 1986. Mr. Pepper served as the ninth Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive of P&G. He retired from the company and Chairman of the Board as of July 1, 2002, after 38 years of service. He retired as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board, effective July 1, 2003.
Then, in January 2004, Mr. Pepper joined Yale as Vice President for Finance and Administration, his current role. He has responsibility for the university’s financial services, capital planning, construction and facilities management, HR, IT, student financial and administrative services, and internal audit.
A native of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, Mr. Pepper graduated from Yale University in 1960, and holds honorary doctorate degrees from Xavier University, Ohio State University, Mount St. Joseph College, and St. Petersburg University (Russia).
Mr. Pepper is a member of the Board of Directors of the Xerox Corporation, Motorola Inc., and the Boston Scientific Corporation. He is deeply committed to community service, particularly education. He founded and is Vice Chairman of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. Mr. Pepper also serves as Honorary Co-Chair of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Development Campaign and is a member of the Executive Committee.
He served as a Fellow of the Yale Corporation for eight years, the last two as Senior Fellow. Mr. Pepper stepped down from the corporation upon his appointment as Vice President. He also served as Chairman of the United States Advisory Committee for Trade and Policy Negotiations. He served as Chairman of the Ohio Business Roundtable (1998-99) and the Greater Cincinnati United Way Campaign (1994).
Mr. Pepper and his wife, Francie, have four children and reside in Wyoming, Ohio.
